Xenakis døydde i 2001, men i dei åtti åra før og fram til idag gjer han framleis skade på skuldlause folk si forståing av musikk og korsong verda over. Xenakis og eg fann ikkje tonen. Dette kan naturlegvis vere mi skuld, men Det Norske Solistkor si framføring av ein av hans “Nuits” i Aulaen på Firda Vidaregåande Skule i går kveld kan tyde på at Xenakis hadde store vanskar med å finne tonen også når han sat åleine og komponerte.

Min vyrdnad for Det Norske Solistkor er høg (og stigande) – det er ikkje tvil om at det var eit krevjande verk å framføre og at dette vart gjort med glans – det er derimot tvil om kva tid Xenakis var fødd. 29. Mai 1921 verkar å vere det heitaste tipset på verdsveven og eg vil hermed føreslå dette som offentleg sørgjedag i Noreg.

Kjøp alt du kan få tak i av Xenakis – og brenn det på bålet saman med kunsten til Stig Eikaas.

Are Frode har altså lukkast med begge deler og kan i år by på ei veke med meisterkurs, åtte konsertar og – av årsaker eg har vanskeleg for å forstå – ein fotballkamp der musikarar frå festivalen spelar mot det lokale “elitelaget” STIL.

(Eg har vanskar med å sjå at nokon av partane kan vere tente med dette; anten vert musikarane slakta som sist – eller dei vinn – og det lokale fotballaget må legge ned aktiviteten og finne andre ting å fylle liva sine med.)

Festivalen kan skilte med eit utmerkt program og eg reiser beinvegen til Gloppen i morgon kveld for å få med meg opningskonserten “Grieg og det Norske Solistkor”. Har også tenkt å få med meg konserten med Kristin Asbjørnsen i Breimskyrkja Laurdag kveld og kanskje nokre til. Dette blir bra!

Ein noko meir rettvis kritikk mot toradaren er at den set litt snevre grenser for kva melodiar som kan spelast på den. Dette, samt sterkt påtrykk frå ei eg på den tida delte husvære med, gjorde til at eg på slutten av ’90-talet pakka ned toradaren – for godt. To gonger har toradaren vore henta fram frå gløymselen etter dette. Eine gongen i samband med 80-årsdagen til Audun Fitje og andre gongen sist helg i samband med bryllaupet til Edle og Kåre Helgheim.

Hadde eigentleg gløymt kor kjekt det var å spele. Toradaren er attende i kråa si men – denne gongen skal eg ikkje like skråsikkert sverge på at den aldri kjem fram att.

I skrivande stund digitaliserar eg dei gamle “kassettbanda” mine slik at eg framleis kan høyre gjennom dei ein gong i framtida når bandspelarar berre er eit vagt minne frå ei forgangen tid og CD-plater og DVDar vert synte fram i museum til framtida sine pensjonistar med rustande nasepiercing og falmande skinnjakkar.

To my deep regret I had never heard Vreid play live before, despite having known Sture for nigh on 10 years! Thus it was that we set off to the famed black metal stage Underworld in Camden, north London.

It was a great experience although certain elements of the audience caused a chill down my spine! Black metal artists are excellent performers and theatre people, it is the the Cathy Bates’es on the front row you need to look out for!

Also a distinctively unsympathetic door man with dreadlocks was reluctant to let me and colleague Gunnar Urtegaard into the concert in the first place due to our deviant and non-black appearances.

After visiting Helsinki’s tractor pub Zetor, named after the Czech tractor brand popular during the Cold War, my interest for Leningrad Cowboys came to life again after years of slumber. The pub, owned by Aki Kaurismaki, was decorated with Zetors fitted with a bar counter so you could sit on or around the tractors enjoying your beer. Almost like home.

My first meeting with Leningrad Cowboys was through Kaurismakis 1989 cult film, Leningrad Cowboys go America (which I didn’t see until 1996). I was immediately intrigued by the pack of strange characters, the lack of continuous dialog and their highly original and irregular interpretations of rock’n roll music!

As with so many things, the contrasts are what makes the band ingenious. The cooperation between the Cowboys and the Alexandrov Red Army choir see to it that contrast is in plenty! Together they do covers such as “California Girls”, “Happy together” and balalaika renditions of “Sweet Home Alabama”, “Knocking on Heavens door” and “Stairway to Heaven”.

Great stuff!

Barrio Altos many gems include the restaurante O Faio, an excellent although a bit touristy restaurant with nightly Fado entertainment in doses suitable for non-hardcore Fado fans.

The restaurant boasts many excellent dishes among which you’ll find grilled Porco Preto sausages and chops, queijo da serra and excellent bacalhau.

You may have to suffer the company of a few white-sneaker-wearing Americans tourists by the table next to yours – but remember that they are likely to dislike you just as much as you dislike them. Go for it.
